Pain Relief
Massage for tension headaches in Daly City, and where it actually helps
The trial evidence for the headache itself is thin. For the neck and shoulder line underneath it, it is much stronger — and that is the hour this studio sells.
The short answer
Massage for tension headaches in Daly City works better on the neck and shoulders than on the headache itself. A 2013 review of 12 studies and 757 people found massage beat inactive treatment for neck and shoulder pain. The named hour is $90 for 60 minutes, $130 for 90 minutes.
- across 12 neck and shoulder studies reviewed in 2013
- 757 participants
- in the 2015 trial where massage did not beat a sham

Does massage help a tension headache?
Less for the headache itself than for the neck and shoulders underneath it, and the difference matters when you are deciding what to book. NCCIH's summary of the science counts only a handful of headache trials and their results have not lined up. The most relevant is a 2015 randomized trial of 56 people with tension headaches, split between trigger-point massage, an inactive sham and a waiting list: headache frequency dropped in the massage group and the sham group alike, with no difference between them.
The stronger findings sit one layer down, in the muscles a tension headache lives on. A 2013 review of 12 studies and 757 participants found massage more helpful than inactive therapies for neck and shoulder pain, though not better than other active treatments, with the shoulder benefit holding short-term only. A 2014 dosing trial of 228 people with chronic neck pain found sessions of 60 minutes, given several times a week, beat fewer or shorter ones.
So the honest pitch is a loosened neck and shoulder line, which for a lot of people is where the headache was coming from anyway. It is not a cure for headaches, and this page will not pretend otherwise.
Headache frequency fell in the massage group and the sham group alike, with no difference between them.
Is it a tension headache in the first place?
Steady, mild-to-moderate pressure on both sides of the head, lasting anywhere from 30 minutes to 7 days. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke calls tension-type headache the most common headache condition, and most people describe a belt tightening around the skull rather than a throb.
NINDS separates it from migraine on 4 points: no pre-headache aura, no nausea or vomiting, no worsening when you walk or climb stairs, and sensitivity to light or sound but not both. A headache that throbs on one side, brings nausea, or gets worse when you move points somewhere else and needs a different plan than an hour on a table.
- Waking with a headache most mornings is worth an evaluation — Mayo names sleep apnea as a cause of tension-type headache.
- Painkillers on more than 9 days a month can make headaches harder to treat, per NINDS.
- A headache that is suddenly the worst you have had, or comes with fever, confusion or weakness, is an emergency, not a booking.
Which hour do you book for it?
Neck, Shoulder & Head Pain Relief, at $90 for 60 minutes or $130 for 90 minutes. It is the one booking on the menu built around exactly that territory: the base of the skull, the shoulder line, the upper back and the scalp, rather than an even sweep from heels to neck.
The hour covers that ground at a working pace. The 90 minute booking buys repetition on whichever side has been carrying the load, which is usually the right call if the headaches have been arriving most days rather than most weeks.
The 15 minute scalp add-on at $20 attaches to any booking and is the piece people most often wish they had added. Hot stones, cupping and a hot compress come with the massage at no extra charge, and heat across a locked shoulder line is doing more work than it gets credit for.
| Booking | Price | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Neck, Shoulder & Head — 60 min | $90 | Base of skull, shoulder line, upper back, scalp |
| Neck, Shoulder & Head — 90 min | $130 | The same ground, with the loaded side worked twice |
| Scalp add-on — 15 min | $20 | Attaches to any booking, above the 60 or 90 minutes |
What helps between appointments?
The dull fundamentals, and they outperform anything you can buy. Mayo Clinic's self-care guidance for tension-type headache leads with lifestyle and gets specific: eat on a regular schedule and skip no meals, drink plenty of water, and hold the same wake time and bedtime 7 days a week, weekends included.
Caffeine cuts both ways. Mayo puts the threshold at 400 milligrams a day, roughly 4 cups of coffee, above which it starts causing headaches rather than easing them — and quitting suddenly causes them too. A steady moderate amount most days beats a 5-cup Tuesday followed by a dry Saturday.
For the muscle tension itself Mayo's direct advice is heat, delivered 5 ways: a heating pad on low, a hot water bottle, a hot shower or bath, a warm compress, or a hot towel. Ice works for some people instead. Both are cheap enough to try tonight.

Questions people ask
Will one massage stop my headache?
It may ease the muscle tension around it, and for some people that is enough. The trial evidence for the headache itself is thin: in a 2015 trial of 56 people, massage and an inactive sham both reduced headache frequency by the same amount. The neck and shoulder benefit has better support behind it.
Which booking is right if the headaches come most days?
The 90 minute Neck, Shoulder & Head Pain Relief at $130, and more than once. The 2014 dosing trial of 228 people with chronic neck pain found 60 minute sessions given several times a week beat shorter or rarer ones. Daily headaches also warrant a conversation with a clinician.
Can you work on my scalp as well?
Yes. The named hour already includes the scalp, and the 15 minute scalp add-on at $20 attaches to any booking on top of the 60 or 90 minutes if you want longer there.
What does it cost?
Neck, Shoulder & Head Pain Relief Massage is $90 for 60 minutes and $130 for 90 minutes. Hot stones, cupping and a hot compress are included at no extra charge. The scalp add-on is $20 for 15 minutes. No membership and no booking fee.
Is it safe if I get migraines too?
Tell the therapist before you lie down, and tell your own clinician you are trying it. NCCIH puts the risk of harm from massage low, with rare reports of serious effects. A headache that throbs on one side or brings nausea is a different condition from tension-type and needs a different plan.
