The short answer

Massage for lower back pain in Daly City helps modestly and for a stretch of days rather than for good. A 2015 Cochrane review of 25 studies found pain eased right after treatment, on low-quality evidence. Deep Tissue runs 60 minutes for $80 and 90 minutes for $110.

Does massage actually help lower back pain?

Yes, modestly, and for days rather than for good. A 2015 Cochrane review pooled 25 studies and 3,096 patients with low-back pain and found they reported less pain shortly after treatment. The reviewers also said the underlying studies were weak enough that they had "very little confidence" in massage as a treatment for it, and that summary — carried by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health — is the honest place to start.

That is a smaller promise than most spa menus make, and it is still worth an hour when your back has locked up. What it changes is the expectation you walk in with: a few easier days, not a repair.

The one trial worth knowing in detail is a 2011 randomized study of 401 adults with chronic low-back pain. At 10 weeks both massage groups were doing meaningfully better than usual care, and the relaxation group scored 2.9 points lower on the Roland Disability Questionnaire, where lower means less disability. Structural massage, with its targeted technique, did no better than plain relaxation massage. You do not need a special method to get the effect.

Which booking should you make for a sore lower back?

Sixty minutes of Deep Tissue at $80, unless this is your first massage in years. The lower back is one region, but it does not work alone: the hips, the glutes and the upper back all pull on it, and an hour is the shortest booking that reaches all of them without rushing.

If you have never had firm work before, start with Swedish at $70 for 60 minutes and ask for more pressure as you go. Starting deep and enduring it teaches your body to brace, which is the opposite of what the hour is for.

The 90 minute booking at $110 buys repetition rather than territory. It is the right call when one side has been carrying the load for weeks and a single pass through has not held.

What each length reaches on a lower-back booking
Length Price What it covers Best for
30 min$45The lower back aloneA targeted top-up between longer sessions
60 min$80Lower back, hips and glutesThe standard booking for a flare
90 min$110The above, worked through twiceA stubborn side that keeps coming back
120 min$150Full body with the back unhurriedWhen the whole chain is involved

What should you tell the therapist?

Where it hurts, what makes it worse, and how hard you want it worked. A therapist cannot feel what you feel, and the pressure that suited the last person on the table can be wrong for you by a wide margin.

Before you lie down

Name the spot and the trigger. "Low on the right, worse after driving, go firm there and stay light on my neck" is worth more than "deep tissue please". Say it in the room rather than typing it into a booking note.

What to mention without being asked

Recent injury, recent surgery, pregnancy, blood thinners, or a back problem a clinician has already named. Pregnancy has its own booking at $90 for 60 minutes, worked side-lying and supported. NCCIH puts the risk of harm from massage low, with rare reports of serious effects such as a blood clot, nerve injury or bone fracture, and the way that risk stays low is that the therapist knows what they are working around.

  • Pain that runs down a leg, or comes with numbness or weakness, is a clinician's question before it is a massage booking.
  • Pain that arrived with a fall or a lift belongs in front of a doctor first.
  • Firm is not the same as painful. If you are holding your breath, the pressure is too much and saying so costs nothing.

How long does the relief last?

Days to weeks, then it fades. The 2015 Cochrane review said the long-term effects of massage for low-back pain have not been established, and the reviews that followed kept describing the benefit as short-term.

NCCIH's guidance on chronic pain frames that the way a clinician would: complementary approaches sit alongside conventional care rather than replacing it. If your back has been sore for months, the useful question is not whether one hour fixes it but whether a regular hour makes the weeks in between easier to get through.

Bounded relief is still relief. Booked during a bad stretch it can be the difference between sleeping and not, and that is worth $80 to plenty of people without anyone needing to oversell it.

Questions people ask

Is deep tissue the right choice for lower back pain?

Usually, at $80 for 60 minutes, but not if it is your first massage in years. The 2011 trial of 401 adults found relaxation massage matched the more technical version, so starting with Swedish at $70 and asking for firmer pressure as you go is a reasonable route to the same result.

How often should I book?

There is no established schedule for low-back pain. The neck-pain dosing evidence favored 60 minute sessions given several times a week over shorter or rarer ones, so if you are booking for a flare, a run of a few sessions will do more than one long one. Between flares, most people come when the back tells them to.

Will it hurt the next day?

Firm work can leave you feeling worked-over for a day. Heat over the area, ordinary movement and water keep that inside the manageable range. Skip the hard gym session that evening and take a walk instead.

What does it cost?

Deep Tissue is $45 for 30 minutes, $80 for 60 minutes, $110 for 90 minutes and $150 for 120 minutes. Swedish is $70 for 60 minutes. Hot stones, cupping and a hot compress are included at no extra charge on both, and there is no membership or booking fee.

Should I see a doctor instead?

See one first if the pain runs down a leg, brings numbness or weakness, followed a fall or a lift, or has not shifted in weeks. Massage is not medical care. NCCIH describes complementary approaches as something that sits alongside conventional treatment, not in place of it.
